THE SIGNAL

In a study run in March 2021 and published in April 2021, Microsoft's Human Factors Lab had 14 people take part in video meetings while wearing EEG caps. On one day they sat through four half-hour meetings back to back. On another, the same meetings had 10-minute breaks between them, which participants spent meditating.

Microsoft reports that in two straight hours of back-to-back meetings, the average activity of beta waves, which are associated with stress, increased over time. With breaks, beta activity held steady, "with no buildup of stress even as four video calls continued." Microsoft also reports that the transition between calls "can be a source of high stress" when there is no break.

It is a small study of 14 people, and it measured a brain signal associated with stress, not a diagnosis. The direction is still hard to ignore.

BEFORE

Hypothetical: a hospital's revised discharge checklist is ready for approval. Nursing, case management and pharmacy have each signed off. The chief medical officer approves it, and the only open slot is the last meeting of a day of back-to-back calls.

The file is ready. The person who can release it is not.

WHAT THE WAIT COSTS

The item gets the last 10 minutes of the worst-rested hour of her day. Or it slips to next week. Either way, the people who built it keep holding the old checklist, and the decision lands when she is least able to give it her best judgment.

AFTER

The checklist reaches the chief medical officer as one packet: the changes, each department's sign-off, the open risks and the related policy decisions she made before, each cited.

She reviews it in a quiet window that morning, approves it with one note, and her afternoon has one fewer meeting in it.

HOW WISDOMTWIN FITS

WisdomTwin.ai is building a sovereign judgment layer for regulated enterprises. It is designed to give each named approver a role-specific judgment twin that prepares the decision packet the way that person reviews, with the evidence attached, so the decision moves faster and leaves an auditable record. It is designed to run on-premises, on-device or in your private cloud, and the named person still makes the call.

We don't replace judgment. We remove the wait.

TRY THIS THIS WEEK

  • Find the longest back-to-back stretch on your calendar this week.

  • Mark which of those meetings exist only to get one person's decision.

  • Move one of them to a written packet and use the freed slot as a real break.
