A chart showing rising GPU prices can feel like a verdict on the entire AI economy.

Before reaching that conclusion, identify exactly what was priced.

What the current source shows

Ornn’s public page lists October 17 settlements of USD $2.78 per H100 SXM GPU-hour and USD $8.48 per B200 GPU-hour. It describes the Compute Price Index as a volume-weighted, winsorized average of transacted rental prices. [1]

The screenshot circulated with this series claims prices rose for 17 consecutive days, but it does not identify enough of the underlying series for me to independently confirm that streak. I am not treating it as an established market-wide result.

My judgment

For a buyer, the decisive unit is the cost of completing acceptable work under your constraints.

An hourly quote is an input. The comparison still needs to include throughput, utilization, storage, networking, setup time, and the review required after generation.

Here is a hypothetical example. One configuration costs less per hour but takes longer to complete your workload. Another produces output faster but requires more correction. You cannot choose between them responsibly from the hourly price alone.

Write down a repeatable workload and ask each option to complete it. Keep the inputs and quality criteria fixed. Measure elapsed time, direct charges, and human review separately.

Also match the purchasing terms. A short rental, an interruptible instance, a reserved cluster, and a long commitment are different products. A global benchmark does not guarantee a particular quote in the region where your data must remain.

The practical question is whether the configuration improves the economics of your actual work.

Your 10X action

Take one existing compute or AI service bill. Translate it into cost per accepted deliverable, including review. Identify which costs you still cannot attribute.

Build a comparison worksheet for [workload]. Record GPU or service type, region, contract duration, availability terms, elapsed time, usage, storage, networking, and human review. Calculate cost per accepted deliverable using observed values. Keep estimated and measured values separate. Do not infer a market-wide trend from a single index or quote.

Reply with the unit of useful output your team should be pricing.
